1. Tranquil but accessible
You can travel from Uccle to the centre of Brussels in no time, of course, but the municipality is an ideal base for anyone wanting to travel further afied too. Two major roads – the Chaussée de Waterloo and the Chaussée d’Alsemberg – cross the municipality. Before you know it, you’re on the Brussels Ring, heading off to explore the rest of Belgium. 4. A rich history
With a past stretching back to the Middle Ages, there’s no doubt that Uccle has plenty of cultural heritage. From Château de Pape and the Nekkersgat Mill to Henri Vandevelde’s Villa Bloemenwerf and a host of old artist’s studios: it’s easy to dive straight into the past in Uccle. The municipality has made its mark in Belgium more recently too, as the home of the Royal Meteorological Institute and Royal Observatory, which, alongside the Royal Belgian Institute for Space Aeronomy, make up Belgium’s Space Pole.
5. A place for sport
Sport is good for the body and the mind. Uccle encourages young and old to get active, through sport cheques, for example, which can be used at just under 10 different sports complexes or one of the many clubs. A range of activities are organised at the municipal swimming pool too, including aquabike, aquagym and diving. Not really a water baby? Nordic walking, boxing and gymnastics also form part of Uccle’s sports offering. There are opportunities for the older population to stay active as well: a wide range of workshops and outings as well as recreation and sports centres help you to keep moving as you age.
6. High-quality education and job opportunities
Education and work are top priorities in Uccle. You’ll find a variety of primary and secondary schools, as well as the beautiful Uccle Art School, located in the historic Wolvendael Castle. With the proximity of both the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and the Université Libre de Bruxelles, it’s no wonder that Uccle is a breeding ground for young talent, drawing attractive employers to the area.
